Time & Again: The Photographs of Allen Dutton

September 16 through November 30, 2004
Since 1960, Allen Dutton has been photographing the Arizona landscape and the people who have chosen to make their lives here. His work can be seen as a form of social anthropology—one engaged in documenting the ways in which people move through, experience and reshape their surroundings.
In the first of two series presented in this exhibit, Dutton has juxtaposed turn-of-the-century archival photographs with presentday shots of the same locations. This series sheds light on the spectrum of change that has characterized the State of Arizona’s development.
The second series features the residents and homes of Sun City and Sun Lakes. Here too, several locations have been photographed after an interval of 15 years, demonstrating change on a more subtle and human scale.
The interpretation of the exhibit is built around responses to the photographs given by professors from the ASU Departments of Anthropology and Geography. These individual reactions link with certain themes touched upon in Allen Dutton’s artwork and provide a reflective, collaborative approach to issues of human land use and visual anthropology.
